Stalin was able to rise as Lenin's successor and defeat his rival, Trotsky despite being less intelligent than him because of several factors such as:
- Stalin's pragmatic nature to make his ambition come true by taking any chances possible without considering idealism, something that Trostky clung on firmly.
- Stalin didn't mind building coalition with anyone, as long as it could lead to his ambition.
- Stalin's ability to manipulate the public in order to get their sympathy, such as naming the city Petrograd as Leningrad to gain more support from the people.
- A number of Trostsky's fatal mistake, which led to his failure to be Lenin's successor, such as, not coming to Lenin's funeral, attacking people who were the key of his plan, criticising Lenin in his personal exposed letter to his friend, despite a great recommendation from Lenin to himself as the candidate successor.

Such unfortunate events on Trotsky and Stalin's ability to turn things round for his own advantage were the key of Stalin's success to replace Lenin.
